Please Join Us! 2013-2014 Membership Drive

As Friends of Fine Arts (FOFA) embarks on our 16th year, we are pleased and proud of the energy and direction of the organization. If you aren't already familiar with FOFA, we'd like to take a moment to introduce you to our activities and invite you to join us.

What does FOFA do?
FOFA works in collaboration with Band Boosters and Choir Boosters to serve more than 1,700 students who participate in curricular arts programs at South High School. Last year, FOFA supported more than $10,000 in projects which helped ignite a passion for the arts in our musicians and visual artists, including:

Student scholarships - FOFA offers summer study grants in music and visual art and assistance to students requiring financial support to pursue private instruction.

Student fundraising - by organizing various fundraisers, FOFA helps students fund their own accounts and pay for supplies, lessons and school-sponsored trips.

Visiting musicians and artists - FOFA helps expand the boundaries of the classroom by supporting opportunities for students to learn from professional artists.

Equipment - students of the visual and musical arts at South High School benefit from FOFA's purchases of supplemental equipment for fine arts instruction.

Events - FOFA helps organize and provide hospitality support for concerts, art shows and other fine arts events.

How can you help?
Parents can support our efforts in three ways:
1.   Contribute any level of financial assistance by joining FOFA
2.   Provide volunteer assistance at events
3.   Support our various fundraisers held throughout the year

We fully understand the complexities of the current economy and want you to know that your participation, at any level, is valued and enables fulfillment of our vision to ignite a passion for the arts in every learner. Please see our brochure for more information on our organization and to indicate your commitment.

Thanks in advance for your participation on every level. We anticipate another fantastic year in the arts here at South High School.

Artistically yours,
The 2013-2014 FOFA Board

Time to Get Ready for the District 99 Orchestra Banquet!

Dear Orchestra Families,

Our annual Orchestra Banquet is less than a month away, on Friday, May 3 at North High School. This year we're continuing the Basket Raffle fundraising tradition which supports the ongoing need to replace the school-owned string instruments and bows. (Last year we raised nearly $1,200!)

To make this a success, we need everyone's help collecting and assembling donations to be raffled/auctioned off. Basket ideas include:
  • Finals Week Care Package (lots of food and goodies)
  • Summer Picnic Package (basket, blanket, candles, etc.)
  • Fourth of July theme (anything red, white and blue)
  • Other potential themes -- spa essentials, music, pets, fitness, art, entertainment, food, jewelry, etc.
Donations can be made by individual families or a group of people. Single items will also be accepted; we'll assemble them into baskets. Other ways to help:
  • Join a team that will solicit donations from local businesses. (Don't worry, we'll provide instructions and coordinate efforts.)
  • Come early on the day of the banquet to help set things up.
  • Tap your creative side by helping get donations ready for display.
Our hope is that every orchestra family participates in some way. Please use the form below to let us know how you can help. (And be sure to hit the Submit button.) Thanks!!

Last year's winners are performing on Tuesday, April 2nd at 7:30 pm.  In addition, former Rising Star DGN alumnus and cellist Josh Zajac will be performing as well as future DGS jazz musicians currently in the Lakeview Jazz Band.  Also, the newly formed, student run A Cappella group at the College of DuPage will be included on the program.  The location is the Faith United Methodist Church at the corners of 59th and Fairview in Downers Grove.  Faculty, friends and family are welcome to attend this exciting event.
